Canada is the overwhelming favourite to defeat the Germans in their qualification game at this years Winter Olympics.  It would take nothing short of a miracle for Germany to come out on top after this game.  The real question should be how much will Canada win by?  Here is the spread at Bet365 right now:

Germany +4.5       +110

This means that Canada must win by 5 or more goals for a bet on Canada to win, and the bet has -140 odds, which means you must wager $140 to win $100.

Now here is what I think.

5 goals is a lot to win a hockey game by.  The Swedes only beat the Germans by 2 goals and the Finns only won by 5 which would have just beat this spread.  These results would have you lean in favour of Germany in this bet, especially since Canada is favoured to beat this spread according to the (-140) to (+110) american odds.

However, Canada did go all out against a similar team in the round robin, beating Norway by 8 goals, and that game wasn’t even an elimination game.  Canada will come out in this game vs Germany with all guns blazing in an attempt to regain some confidence after their last two poor games.  If Canada gets an early lead you can expect that they will keep pressuring and trying to run up the score in an attempt to improve their chemistry, and regain their scoring touch.  For these reasons Canada should beat the spread and win this game over Germany by a large margin.
